F45 Hybrid Power System

A Game Changer in Yacht Stabilization

Quantum’s F45 Hybrid Power System combines hydraulic and electric power to reduce stabilizer energy use and maximize performance. Designed for efficiency and sustainability, it stores and recovers energy, bringing power savings of up to 80%.

The Quantum F45

The F45 is a innovative, electric-hydraulic hybrid power system that is scalable to larger vessels. This Hybrid Power System offers an alternative method to powering stabilizers, using the best features of a traditional hydraulic system and the cleaner advantages of a direct electric drive, making it major break-through in stabilizer technology!  Overall, it requires 60% less power than a standard hydraulic system, only consuming energy as required, when required.

A traditional hydraulic system will continue to draw 40% of the maximum power, even when it is not needed, so there is a lot of wasted energy.  The F45 drops to less than 1kW when in standby mode.  These efficiencies do result in extreme power fluctuations that can cause problems for the ship’s generators and the overall grid.  The remedy?  Quantum has developed a solution to store and recover energy through the proprietary M.E.S.S. (Mass Energy Storage System).

Advantages & Features

Key Advantages of the F45

Up to 80% Power Reduction

The F45 can reduce the power usage of a vessel by up to 60% in zero speed mode, and 80% underway. It uses a patent pending, flywheel technology, to store and recover energy in a most efficient and effective way. Essentially, it marries the best attributes of the hydraulic and electric powering systems.

Four Times Quieter

While the F45 increases power efficiency, the structure-born noise and heat generated have decreased. The team has built a sound enclosure for the equipment, and the entire hydroelectric power unit is mounted on an epoxy-granite mounting base. This makes the F45 Hybrid is 4X quieter than other traditional hydraulic systems.

Energy Storage

The F45 generates smooth power that does not fluctuate, through the proprietary M.E.S.S. (Mass Energy Storage System) It enables the power to be stored when the fins are not moving and internally produces energy back into the system to augment the power supply when it is most needed.

Energy Recovery

One of the critical features of the F45 Hybrid System is its ability to recover energy. Any excess energy from fin deceleration (Zero Speed) or hydrodynamic force (underway) can also be recovered and stored for future use. This is called: Dynamic Energy Recovery.

“When you consider a yacht at anchor, the two largest power-consuming sources are air conditioning and stabilizers, and we are now taking 60% of the power out of the stabilizer system.  This really makes the F45 a game changer.  It’s a changer for everything!”

Understanding the F45

F45 Key Advantages

Power Smoothing

Unlike a traditional hydraulic system, the F45 generates smooth power that does not fluctuate and therefore doesn’t limit cyclical loading.

60% More Efficient

Besides its power savings, the F45 also boasts 60% greater efficiencies, partially due to the elimination of control valves in exchange for a servo motor.

Energy Buffering

The F45 buffers energy to mitigate the extreme fluctuations to stay within 15% – 20% of the dynamic range of the average power consumption.
