Proven Stabilization Technology

P & S Fin Stabilizer

Discover Quantum’s P and S fins, a proven design based on rigorous model tests and extensive practical experience. Quantum’s fin blade design incorporates unique features directed at achieving maximum performance from the smallest possible footprint. The P fin range additionally increases performance during Zero Speed™ and provide great flexibility for fin installation.

The S fin has a sleeker profile and is tailored for high speed, highly maneuverable rugged military boats with the least amount of drag penalty. The P fin on the other hand is well balanced option for both underway and zero-speed operations.

A trusted solution for militaries around the globe

Over the past decades, Quantum has supplied numerous international navies with stabilizers for Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), Frigates, Fast Response Cutters (FRC-B) and more. With different platforms configured for different missions, P and S fins provide a cost-effective solution without compromising performance requirements.
At Quantum, we understand that system commonality is essential for militaries, simplifying crew exchange and keeping platforms mission ready at all times. As a result, the P and S fin systems are designed for ease of maintenance and serviceability, while making sure a system is uniform across all vessels and platforms.

P and S Fins for Yachts

While P and S fins are widely used in naval applications, they also provide a stabilization solution for the yachting market. As with all Quantum systems, the selection of a P or S fin is custom and depends on vessel type and operational profile.
A potential application is on a smaller vessel that does not require XT fins for their cruising requirements. On larger yachts, P and S fins are often used in hybrid configurations as part of a four-fin stabilization system. In these setups, a combination of XT fins paired with P fins or S fins can be implemented to optimize performance, efficiency, and onboard comfort depending on vessel size, hull form, and operational requirements.

The variable-height ‘C’-shaped trailing edge extends the effective blade length, increasing usable area and delivering high efficiency for demanding naval operations.

Key advantages of P & S Fins

ADVANTAGES & FEATURES

Vortex Generator

Conventional fin blades gradually narrow to a point at the trailing edge. However, Quantum fins are predominantly designed with a variable height ‘C’ shaped end profile, or vortex generator, along the whole trailing edge. This sudden ending of the fin blades creates a virtual lengthening of the blade, which increases the effective area.

Combination with Bilge Keels

At anchor, where no flow is available over the fins, Quantum P and S fins utilize blade movement through the water to create a stabilizing moment. They can be combined with existing bilge keels that add passive damping while having minimal influence on fin performance. Underway, water flow over the fin generates lift to counter roll, while bilge keels located in front of a fin can aid stabilizer fins by aligning the flow into the stabilizer fin.
