About the Lürssen shipyard

Lürssen is a German pedigree shipyard that was founded in 1875. The boatbuilder operates five shipyards along the northern coast of Germany, including the largest dry dock in northern Europe.

Renowned for technical excellence and building yachts of the finest quality, Lürssen utilises advanced construction and assembly technology that enables the shipyard to build the finest bespoke superyachts in the world. The shipyard covers the full spectrum of yacht construction, as well as refit and large yacht maintenance. Lürssen
has established a name for bespoke yachts of 55 to 180-metres plus, including some of the world’s most ambitious and creative mega yacht builds. In addition, the shipbuilder is renowned for its technically advanced refits and maintenance of any yacht up to a length of well over 200m.

Lürssen: A family yacht building business steeped in history

The shipyard was founded by Friedrich Lürssen in Aumund (close to Bremen), Germany. Initially, the shipyard focused on racing rowboats; however, in 1886, the company’s direction changed when Lürssen built the world’s first motorboat for Gottlieb Daimler.

In 1907, Lürssen’s son Otto joined the shipyard as a partner bringing practical and theoretical knowledge as a shipbuilding engineer. He focused on improving past methods and bringing new technical expertise. This innovative approach remains central to the yacht builder today. In 1938 the shipyard welcomed its third generation when Gert Lürssen joined the company.

In 1971 Lürssen launched the M/Y CARINTHIA VI, setting new worldwide standards in yacht design. The 71-metre yacht is seen as the precursor of today’s Lürssen yachts and gained the shipbuilder international recognition.

In the late 1970s, the fourth generation joined the company, acquiring new shipyards and establishing a new yacht building division at the end of the 1980’s. Peter Lürssen is CEO of Lürssen, overseeing some of the world’s most extraordinary and ground-breaking superyachts. Today, 29 of the Top 100 yachts have been built by Lürssen.

Famous Lürssen yachts

Famous Lürssen yachts include the 180-metre M/Y AZZAM, which, when launched in 2013, was the largest yacht in the world. She boasts state-of-the-art cruising technology, including a world-class propulsion system that makes her one of the fastest superyachts in the world, with a speed that exceeds 30 knots. Other advanced features include marine stabilizers that ensure the utmost comfort at sea. Despite her highly advanced build and technical specifications, M/Y AZZAM’s build time was less than three years.

One of Lürssen’s more recent mega yachts is the 141.6-metre NORD. Delivered in 2021, she has been purposefully designed for long-range cruising. She features the latest cruising technology and amenities, including a state-of-the-art propulsion system, stabilizers, two helipads and an exhaust after-treatment system, which can achieve a cleaning rate of up to 97% of nitrogen and additional reduction of acoustic noise.

Other notable Lürssen yachts include the 156-metre M/Y DILBAR, the largest yacht by gross tonnage and the 136-metre M/Y FLYING FOX, regarded as the most expensive charter yacht. Lürssen also builds bespoke yachts in the size range of 55m and delivered the 55.5m MOON SAND in 2021.
